A Guide to Protecting Against Corrosion

What is corrosion?

Corrosion is a common problem which causes the deterioration of metal compounds. It is caused by the chemical reaction between metal compounds and the surrounding atmosphere.

There are two main types of corrosion; white rust and red rust. Red rust is ferrous oxide and is often spotted on old cars and other items that have been subjected to the elements for long periods.  White rust is a waxy white powder that is caused by moisture and air reacting to zinc coated metal products.

All metals can be corroded, but some metals can corrode at a faster rate, such as iron or steel. Whereas Noble Metals including rhodium, palladium, platinum, silver and gold are far less reactive and therefore more valuable.

How can you prevent corrosion?

Despite the prevalence of corrosion, there are many ways metal corrosion can be managed and prevented. At Dorsetware we offer a range of effective metal finishing solutions to keep metal items protected against the elements.

  1. Electroplating

Electroplating methods are excellent for corrosion management. Electroplating is the process where a protective metal such as gold or silver is deposited on the surface of an iron or steel product.

  1. Anodising

Our anodising service is a surface treatment which protects against corrosion and increases robustness. Anodising produces a protective film on aluminium which makes a thicker surface, creating a barrier against corrosion.

Anodising produces a silver finish, but dyes can be added during the oxidation process to change the colour of the coating.

  1. Stainless-steel passivation

The passivation of stainless-steel removes free iron contamination left on the surface of stainless-steel during machining or fabrication. This type of contamination can result in premature corrosion. Passivation of stainless-steel forms a thin, transparent oxide film to prevent rust.
