Items that need metal plating require a very specific process in order to achieve the resulting finish that you want. First an item would be cleaned to remove any foreign substances such as oil, wax, rust and other known ‘soils’, creating a blank slate with which to work.
To achieve an effective electroplated finish normally follows three distinct events: Metal Stripping, Metal Polishing and Metal Plating.
- Metal Stripping
Stripping is normally used to remove surface defects such as blisters or skips. This is to adequately prepare the item for the next two stages.
- Metal Polishing
Polishing is used for two reasons. The first makes sure that the surface that you plan to plate is as smooth as possible, enabling a more effective and uninterrupted plating process. The second is to create a mirror-smooth finish.
- Metal Plating
This is the process that adds your chosen finish to the item in question. The most popular plating finish is chrome, which can be used for classic car parts or bicycle parts.
Not many companies provide all three services, which means that you would have to source either two or three companies to complete your request. Luckily at Dorsetware we are equipped with the facilities to undertake all three operations.
