RoHS-Compliant Metal Finishing

The metal finishing industry is regulated very strictly by a number of laws and compliances that both protect you, the customer, and the environment. One of these laws comes from European Law Directive 2011/65/EU which details the Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS).

Metal finishing or plating requires different substances dependant on the finish that is required and due to their adverse affect on the environment must be strictly controlled. Due to the nature of these substances we use in order to produce the finishes in the services we provide, as a metal finishing company we at Dorsetware have a responsibility to respect our surrounding environment.

There are six hazardous substances restricted under the RoHS standards that should not be present above a certain level in end products. These standards also prevent the following from entering waste streams or the water system/table:

  • Lead (Pb)
  • Cadmium (Cd)
  • Mercury (Hg)
  • Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+)
  • Polybrominated Buphenyls (PBB)
  • Polybrominated Dyphenylethers (PBDE)

Hexavalent Chromium was the most popular to use in the plating process before RoHS was implemented. Now, in order to reduce the presence and use of Hexavalent Chromium, we use a trivalent passivation process, which under EU law is the acceptable alternative and compliant with RoHS standards. This can be seen in our zinc plating process which uses a ‘clear’ trivalent passivation process.

Did You Know? Some industries will only use materials that are RoHS-compliant such as the aerospace and military industries.
