Electroplating Guide: Aluminium Anodosing, Alocrom & Iridite NCP Coating

Anodosing is one of the most popular metal finishing services provided by Dorsetware. We offer colour, aluminium, black, chromic acid, custom colour and sulphuric acid anodising in Poole, Dorset. Along with Alocrom plating and Iridite NCP plating, anodized coatings provide aluminium with a range of enhancements – from corrosion and wear protection to electrical insulation.

Anodosing involves turning the surface of an aluminium product, item or object into a thicker layer of aluminium oxide. Oxides can form naturally but this method of electroplating uses a controlled environment to form the thicker finish. As a standard, aluminium Anodosing produces a silver finish, but during the oxidation process, dyes can be added to change the colour of the coating that forms.

Alocrom plating, also known as chromate conversion coatings, is a slight variation of aluminium anodosing whereby the coating’s end result provides a greater level of corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the final coating provides a low electrical resistance. Chromate conversion coatings or Alocrom 1200 and 1000 is most commonly used as a base coat to provide protection before painting.

Dorsetware also offers Iridite NCP plating. Iridite NCP coating is an alternative to chromate conversion coating as it does not contain lead or hexavalent chromium. Dorsetware offers an Iridite NCP finish in response to ELV, RoHS and WEEE directives – an industry decision that is encouraged by Dorsetware to support environmental issues.

In general, the benefits of Anodosing include:

  • Increased Durability & Robustness
  • Increased Corrosion Resistance
  • Increased Electrical insulation or non-conductive
  • Increased aesthetic and decorative appeal
  • Increased stain resistance
